Building — sort of — on my last post, I am again perplexed by The Right. I really am not trying to be partisan here, but what the hell are people talking about? The latest: this brouhaha over whether members of the Bush administration should be prosecuted for advocating, apologizing for or carrying out torture. I think that it’s probably a reasonable question about which reasonable people can disagree. But this is ridiculous.
Peggy Noonan, on Meet the Press this past weekend said, about the so-called torture memos, “Some things in life need to be mysterious,” and” Sometimes you need to just keep walking.” Additionally, “It’s hard for me to look at a great nation issuing these documents and sending them out to the world and thinking, oh, much good will come of that.”
This is insane. At a time when the GOP is struggling to remain relevant, I would think the last thing that you’d want to advocate would be for less government accountability and transparency. Whether or not you are proprosection is beside the point. Open records laws are at the very heart of our government. There is little, really, that I consider more American than being able to publicly investigate our government’s goings-on and to take them to task for their actions. Her position is unreasonable and unAmerican, really. And it also just seems like dumb strategy.
Of course, Russ and others are already all over this.
I. Hate. Peggy. Noonan. I never wanted to hear her retarded, wispy, weirdo voice again after the election, let alone on this subject. I didn’t see MTP but I can just seeing her flicking her hand and saying this oh so nonchalantly. What a gigantic asshole.
Grrrrrr.
I know. This is such a softball post, I know, but I just can’t stand that kind of crap. So STUPID!
I agree. Peggy Noonan is just…. not good. She had a WSJ column this week that I think can only be characterized as blathering. Who keeps putting her on TV and in print?
But I do tend to cringe at releasing anything (legitimately) related to national security and defense.
Well, see, that can be a reasonable position. But it is unreasonable to say something as inane as “Somethings should be mysterious.” Mysterious?! Oh, for crying out loud. She needs to be suspended from talking. Why can’t Meet the Press find some people worth talking to? Oh, I miss Tim. No offense, David Gregory, I’m sure you’re doing a fine job. Can you believe he’s only, like, what? 38 or something?
He’s so damn tall.
I’m not trying to go off topic, but I finally got back to finishing the link to your court case. I really found it fascinating, but I was slightly puzzled by the justice’s constant comments about “what if the words were anti-female or other non race related words”. If the US Supreme court’s decision that you were referring to specifically covers race based fighting words and not gender based, shouldn’t that not really be a question (regardless of whether they agree with the US Supreme Court’s decision or not)?
I don’t watch a lot of court though so maybe it’s just me.
I can’t wait to hear the verdict though!
I thought you did really well with the bombardment of questions. Way to keep your cool. I also enjoyed the honkey bit at the end (and so did they it seemed like!).
Yeah, Rose, I think you’re right. I mean, they were sort of expressing their discomfort, I think, with the race-based hate crimes enhancer in that it excludes gender-based crimes. But those crimes are still crimes, they are just not subject to a penalty enhancement. And yeah, the US Supremes have said the enhancer is ok, so knock it off.
I also thought it was weird that they kept mentioning anti-female slurs or anti-ageist slurs.
and, i do think it’s ridiculous to complain about these memos being released, but i don’t have much to add about this because i have been trying to follow this story, but just have not been able to. i don’t know why. i’m actually having a hard time following most news stories at the moment, even pirates.
Did everyone see cute Heather in the pictures?
Turning to a different topic, I’m going to boot camp in a bit and it’s been about a week since I last went (due to argument & union meeting) and I’m more than a little scared.
Happy Admin Professionals’ Day!
Also, did anyone (I know Fee did!) watch Real Housewives last night? That Kelly really needs help. Among the most shocking of the shocking? A cash bar at her party. Who throws a party and has a cash bar? What?
Love the pictures of Heather… she looked awesome… as did the party. Sad to miss it.
I didn’t see it last night but will catch it at some point (since they re-run it all the time). I tell you—I don’t like Kelly, but the previous made it seem like they were all pretty peeved with her. That show is so funny to me. It’s supposed to be la creme de la creme, but some of them are so strange!
Oh Heather you look wonderful! It looks like a fabulous shower.
I know, Rose! I can’t imagine that they really pass for ‘high society’ among the real ‘high society,’ whoever they may be. They were all pretty pissed at Kelly and even Kelly admitted she was lame. Well, not lame, but ‘not nice.’ She’s such a bonehead. I still can’t get over her weirdo meeting with Bethenny. That Bethenny is really the cat’s pajamas, despite the weird spelling of her name.
I didn’t catch it, either, and have been looking for it in re-runs. I think Bethenny may be the only one I like, and I’m glad that the others may be catching on to what a weirdo Kelly is. Sometimes, I must confess, I like Simon and Alex. Their kids are nutty, as is simon in general, but i like that they are laid back about their house. and bethenny likes alex. i did see that luAnn gets to keep her title. phew.
And Kate threw a great shower, of course. Thanks!
Oh dear, I don’t watch “Real Housewives” but I did see the pics from the shower and Heather, you do look so beautiful. How great is that blue wall as a backdrop, Kate? Well done!
Yes the shower and Heather both looked wonderful.
Kate those walls look great. They really made me realize how truly awful my own walls are. That is the summer project…..
Yes Bethenny is really the only one I like. Jill amuses me at times though. Alex and Simon are weird, but I found the little Alex birthday party with the kids really really sweet.
Rose, I was just thinking about you and now I can’t remember why. I think it had to do with the eyelash curler. Have you tried one yet?
No I haven’t! I need to add that to my weekend list…
If I can pull myself away from playing Rockband 2….
It’s totally addicting.
